Red Arrow 2 - 29 January

Writer: Naren BoodhooNaren Boodhoo

What a blessing!

It was an incredible atmosphere of festivity as we got to see our beautiful children once  again. The morning was filled with energetic learners, ready for a wonderful year.

Blessings! More in 2024!

Thank you to all our specialist subject educators for their set-up of the balloons and music and also their loving welcome at the gates, not forgetting our form educators who made our  children feel safe and comfortable in their beautifully set-up classes.

Moreover, in 2024, Morningside Primary turns 96 on Thursday, the 1st of February. Thank you to Mrs Kermack for this beautiful photograph.

Parents Orientation Evening:

What a large response to our two Parent Evenings! There was an amazing group of attentive  parents who showed up with sense of family and bubbly joy. This was very encouraging.  Thank you in advance for your gentle approach to all aspects this year. We are in this  together for the progress of our children. Morningside will excel once again this year while  our children grow with more in 2024.

Prefect Induction:

Prefect Induction is postponed to a further date, due to the prefect badges company not  being able to deliver our new badges.

House Captains Elections:

Grade 4 to 7 learners will nominate and vote for Grade 7 learners to be 2024 House  Captains and Vice House Captains. This will take place this Friday, the 2nd of February  2024.

Grade 7 Leadership Course:

Our Grade 7 Leadership Course will take place this Friday afternoon, the 2nd of February  2024. Our learners are in for an exhilarating time. Only Grade 7 learners will leave at 4.30p.m. this Friday due to their course.

Aftercare:

There will still be Aftercare on Friday, the 2nd of February 2024.

Big Swim:

Big Swim forms will go home today. We look forward to seeing which class will be the “top  fundraising class.” Thank you to Mrs Ahmed who has sent home a comprehensive plan of  how the fundraising project will work. Please take note of the due dates.

Grade 4 – 7 Swimming Gala Practices:

Swimming Gala Practices will take place at 12.10 p.m. everyday. There will be 4 age divisions  at our gala. Under 10, 11, 12 and 13. The Under 9’s will feature in the Under 10 division at  the Gala. Only Grade 4 to 7’s are allowed participating in our Inter-house Gala. If a learner does not attend school on the selection dates, they will not participate in our  gala. If a learner does not bring their cap, costume and towel, they will not swim in House  selection races and therefore, not be selected for the gala.

Please refer to the table above and ensure that your child has packed their costume, towel  and house-swimming cap for the days that they have practice. No learners will be allowed to  phone home for forgotten items. Sunblock and a nutritious lunch is compulsory. Please note that this practice time is also used to select the swimming teams for each  house. Children will be notified if they are a part of their house swimming teams. Although  we try to include as many learners as possible, not every child will participate in the gala.  Please look out for the final participant and event list to avoid the disappointment of attending the gala only to find that your child is not participating.

Collated by Mr. R Singh

Mums and Dads are invited to our Grade 4 to 7 Gala on

Friday, 23 February 2024.

No learners from Grades 1, 2 and 3 are allowed to attend the Senior Gala.

Congratulations:

Mr R. Singh has been officially appointed by the Department of Education as the  Intermediate / Senior Phase Departmental Head. Well done on your achievement, Mr Singh!

New Finance Collections Officer Appointment:

Mrs Hall retired in December 2023… We hereby, welcome Mrs Vanessa Wearne who is our  new Finance Collections Officer. Those who wish to discuss school-fees or enrol their child  in Aftercare may contact Mrs Wearne via email on vwearne@morningsideps.co.za or  fees@morningsideps.co.za

Term 1 Calendar:

The Term 1 Calendar was posted on the D6 Communicator and on ClassDojo before school  began this year. Please access the “updated” Calendar on a weekly basis to keep abreast of  events.

Drop off at the Gate:

∙ Grade One parents will not be allowed to enter the top and bottom gates from  Thursday, the 1st of February 2024. All learners from Grade 1 to 7 will enter the  gate in the mornings on their own and walk down to their classrooms on their own. If  you need to talk to the class educators, please make an appointment and enter the  school via the office gate. Mrs Mason at the front office will attend to your request.

∙ Parents whose surnames begin with letters A to M will drop off and pick up learners  at the bottom gate. Parents with surnames that begin with the latter part of the  letter M to Z will pick up and drop off learners at the top gate this year. This is to  alleviate the traffic problem at the bottom gate. We ask for lift clubs and the taxi drop off area to be at the top gate.

∙ School begins every day at 7.35 a.m. This means that the school bell will be rung at  7.35 a.m. each morning. The first subject lesson will begin at 7.40 a.m. Learners  should be at school by 7.30 a.m. Please be punctual.

Extra Curricular Activities:

The ECA timetable is posted on the D6 and on ClassDojo. Term 1’s activities begin this  week Tuesday, the 30th of January 2024 and will end on the 15th of March 2024. Please be  prompt in fetching children after the activity.

Please refrain from phoning the office to ask questions such as what activity is happening  and what time learners finish the activity. Refer to the ECA timetable for these Frequently  Asked Questions.

Diligence:

This is a reward system for promoting excellence in all spheres of education. Punctuality is  a family endeavour and so is picking up learners from school on time. When learners are  able to achieve this as well as follow other aspects of schooling such as doing their  homework, good behaviour, remembering to pack their P.E kit, dressing in uniform according  to the Code of Conduct, being sincerely kind even in adversity and showing other good  characteristics, they are rewarded with a Diligence tick.

After receiving a reward tick for 3 assemblies/weeks, a red Diligence badge is given to a  learner.

When learners have not received a reward tick for the week, they will have to give back  their badge since they have not achieved this reward for the week. This is not a  punishment but rather that a learner has not received the Diligence reward.

We are missing quite a few Diligence badges. If you have a Diligence badge at home, please  return it to the class educator.

Diligence badges must always be returned at the end of each term.

Aftercare:

Please note that Aftercare is not part of compulsory education and is therefore, only  accessible if your school fees is paid and up to date. Parents will not be allowed to have  their children attend Aftercare if our records reflect at the end of each month that your  school fees are not being paid.

There are some parents who have not paid their school fees but are able to pay for  Aftercare. School fees is expected first as your primary concern instead of Aftercare. If  you can afford Aftercare and expect to have a further privilege, please keep to your  primary commitment first which is school fees. If you have not paid your school fees,  please make alternate arrangements for your child after school.

“We reserve the right of admission into Aftercare.”

Please do not put me in a difficult situation by asking you not to send your child to  Aftercare.

No Cash:

For the safety of our learners and staff, we have had a cashless school for many years.  Please do not send cash with learners for anything except for the Tuck-shop. EFT’s, the  Karri App and swiping your card at our “Speedpoint” machine in the front office are ways  that you can pay for fundraising events, workbooks, lost name badges, outings as well as  items from our uniform shop. We unfortunately, will refuse any cash that is brought to our  front office.
