Dear Parents

School Governing Body Elections – Parent Component

A reminder that the 3-year cycle SGB Elections will take place on Monday, 11 March 2024. Considering that, this is now the second attempt at the election, no quorum is needed for today’s 5.30 p.m. “Election.” The Election will definitely take place today. Please ensure that you carry your “Identity Document.” Unfortunately, the rules state that we are not allowed to accept a driver’s license as proof of identity. The election is a “closed meeting,” therefore, no one who is not on the voter’s roll may attend. All proposers and seconders of nominees have to attend the election, including the nominee.

Grade 7 Entrepreneurship (Market) Day

The Department of Education’s EMS subject advisor has asked that Market Day be held

according to the DBE’s EMS Year Plan. We will therefore be postponing our Grade 7 Market Day to the second term.

Durban and Districts Gala

What an amazing endeavour by our girls and boys. Our girls came in 8th place out of eleven schools, whilst our boys were placed in 5th place among some of the best schools in Durban and surrounding districts. We have seen our competitive swimming increase in their skill. Thanks must be given to Mrs Wilma Laurence who has coached our squad for the last one year. We also express our gratitude to Mrs Mahabeer who has also joined Mrs Laurence in an effort to increase our children’s skillfulness.

Netball

Our U11 and U13 netball girls turned up the heat on Thursday afternoon after facing the

girls from Al Falaah. The girls played two games each, playing both their A and B teams. Well done to the u11's who won both games! A big “Thank you” to all our wonderful

parents who came through to watch the game and to Mr Singh for driving us to and back

from Al Falaah.

South African Championships

We wish Daniel Black all the best as he will travel to Polokwane, Limpopo during the

holiday to represent KZN at the South African Schools Championships. We wish him all

the best... as one of the sons of the Morningside house strives towards South African

colours. Words cannot express how proud we are of you, Daniel!

Merit Cup Winner

We congratulate DUNCAN HOUSE who have emerged as winners of the Term 1 trophy. As stated in the Term 1 Calendar, the Merit Cup winners may leave school at 11.40 a.m. on Tuesday, the 12th of March 2024.

  • Indemnity forms will be sent home for all DUNCAN HOUSE parents to sign.

  • No Duncan House learner is allowed to go to the gate at 11.40 a.m. without a signed indemnity form. Indemnity forms must be sent back on Tuesday morning.

  • If you are unable to pick up your child early for the Duncan House reward, we will gladly keep your child at school with the 75% of children that will be staying back to continue until the normal home-time.

  • If a Duncan House learner (who has an indemnity formed signed) is not picked up by 11.55a.m, the learner will be brought back from the gate and sent to class.

  • Athlone, Buxton and Clarendon House learners are not allowed to take early leave on

Tuesday, the 12th of March 2024.

Big Swim Fundraiser

  • Thank you to all our incredible parents who have gone all out to raise funds for our school.

  • We also say “Thank you” to Mrs Ahmed who has gone beyond previous years, ensuring that the learners who received the Pizza Reward for over R400 collected had an absolute blast at the party.

  • Mrs Rupnarain’s Grade 1 class has once again emerged as the top fundraising class. Congratulations to Grade 1RN!

  • We have raised over R115 000 thus far.

  • We have an architect, who is one of our parents, coming in Monday to look at

drawing up plans for an obstacle course for our children. I had some complaints

from Grade 4 to 7 children about the Jungle Gym being used for only Grade 1 to 3 learners and so I promised the older children that there would be something for them to exert their energy on.

Extra Mural Activities

Thursday, the 14 March 2024 is the last day for Extra Mural. There will therefore, be

No Girls Soccer on Friday. All educators will be attending a “Reading for Meaning” workshop on 15 March 2024 at 1.20 p.m.

A New Addition to the Morningside Family

Congratulations to Miss Poole on the arrival of Harvey Mark, born on 4 March 2024. What a beauty!

Foundation Phase Swimming Gala

All parents are invited to the Grades 1, 2 and 3 Swimming Gala which will take place on

Monday, 18 March 2024 @ 8 a.m. Considering that nearly every child will be given the

opportunity to participate, we have to limit the number of parents / attendees to just two per learner.

No Aftercare on the Last Day of Term

There will be “No Aftercare” on Wednesday, 20 March 2024. This has always been the

policy at the Morningside Aftercare, in the last decade especially. Please refer to the

Aftercare policy posted last year.

Early Closure on Wednesday, 20 March 2024

School will close at 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday, 20 March 2024. If parents are unable to fetch learners at 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday, we suggest that learners do not come to school at all. Those learners who are absent on Wednesday, 20 March 2024 will not be counted as absent when it comes to them aiming for their “Full Attendance” record. Unfortunately, many transport providers are unable to fetch learners at 10.30 a.m. and educators have had to wait with children who have not been fetched for many hours on the last day of the term. We therefore, ask that parents consider not sending those learners who experience transport challenges to school on the last day of the term. Due to the high volume of learners absent on the last day of term, no significant work will be covered on Wednesday. The staff usually use the last day of term for our strategic planning / grade and subject planning as well as for Term 2’s calendar and the planning and finalising of the Extra- curricular timetable.
